Mari test! Okay. First and foremost, Shakespeare is not a learned man. He is not a man who went to universities and learn drama or literature formally. However, even though he is not scholarly, his presentation of work is very great and the evidence is that he was considered as one of the great Elizabethan writers.
Just so you know, Elizabethan era or..during this zaman, it was when Queen Elizabeth reigned. Therefore, Elizabethan drama refers to the plays produced while Queen Elizabeth was in power in England and that was from 1558 until 1603.
Kalau nak tahu, it was during this time lah the entertainment industry during Elizabethan period prosper. Because the public started or began to attend plays in large number. That's cute. Attend tengok drama secara berjemaah. Tapi..tapi..they watch drama or plays at an open space and it wasn't at all like how we watch theatre today where everyone is silent and pay attention to the actors' performance. During Shakespeare's time, watching a play is like in today's example, like you watch a music band performing. People walk, and eat, and talk, and they just cannot sit still. One more thing to note, during this time jugaklah all the prostitution berleluasa and plague was started or should I say..err...merebak? Yes. Sebab unhygienic place people spent time at. Most famous theater and the home of many Shakespeare's plays were performed was the Globe Theater (1599).
Shakespear's canonical works are:
37 plays were written
154 sonnets were composed
and...2 long narrative poems were written.
He was a famous figure in tragedy plays. Kiranya, he's like an expert in writing tragedy plays lah. Because the message is well delivered to the audience and the plot is organised in a very impressive manner. The beauty of the language used by him is also one of the main important elements in Shakespeare's writing. Among the great tragedies produced were Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear and Othello. In all these four tragedies, it focuses on the tragic hero presented in the plays. Whereby every tragic hero has his own tragic flaw. Their own tragic flaws are the main reason or cause of their downfall. They come from a noble background and they are known as the great, important figures in a society. Example, King, Prince..or any noble man. The reason as to why they have to be an important figure is mainly because, the higher their status are, the harder they will fall in the end. So, Tragedy in Elizabethan era must end with catastrophe like the death of the main character, or senang cerita, the death of the tragic hero. This in return will invoke catharsis in the audience. So, basically, because of the tragic hero's tragic flaw, they actually learned something and they know that what they have done is wrong. Therefore, they get the moral lesson soon before dying. That's awesome, isn't it?
I love Macbeth the most. Oh, and Hamlet. And King Lear. So kesian lah all of them. Memang catharsis itu wujud semasa membaca tragedi-tragedi tersebut.
Not only that, Shakespeare is famous for his comedies as well. One thing to note is that,
Shakespeare does not follow exactly the Aristotle's Poetic rule. The rule is, the unity of action, the unity of time, the unity of place. His plots are complex but it is integrated. As I mentioned before, his plots are very impressive. Aaand.. Madam Farizah said, he is very good at plotting the play proving that he is a skillful storyteller. He invented new way of writing his work by mixing the genres. Yes. A mixed genre.
And usually:
1. In his comedy, it always begins with a great conflict and has tragic elements.
2. In his tragedy, there is the element of jokes. Yes. Jokes.
So, one of the comedies is Twelfth Night. Have you guys watched She's The Man? Dah tengok kan? Okay,
that movie is the adaptation of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
